A knocked-out permanent tooth requires immediate attention because prompt care may improve the chance of saving it.
Pick up the tooth by its crown—the white portion normally visible in the mouth—and avoid touching the root. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it very gently without scrubbing or removing attached tissue. If possible, carefully return it to its socket without touching the root. Do not force it into place.
If reinsertion is not possible, keep the tooth moist in milk or an ADA-accepted tooth-preservation product. Call Harte Dental or an emergency dental provider immediately. Do not reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth.
