What happens if I crack or break a tooth?

A cracked or broken tooth should be evaluated promptly, even when it does not initially hurt. Untreated damage can expose the inner tooth, worsen over time, or allow bacteria to enter.

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your face if swelling is present. Save any broken pieces you can locate and bring them to your appointment. Avoid chewing on the affected side and do not attempt to repair the tooth yourself.

Treatment depends on the location and extent of the damage. Options may include dental bonding, a tooth-colored filling, a crown, or other treatment intended to protect or save the tooth.
