Antibiotics alone generally cannot correct the underlying cause of a dental infection. They may be prescribed when an infection is spreading, produces systemic symptoms such as fever, or presents another clinical concern. However, the affected tooth or gum tissue usually still requires dental treatment.
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may involve drainage, restorative care, root canal treatment, periodontal treatment, or extraction. Taking antibiotics without treating the source may allow the infection to return or worsen.
Never take leftover antibiotics or medication prescribed to someone else. A dentist must evaluate the problem and determine whether antibiotics and additional dental treatment are appropriate.
