Harte Dental: Did You Know strawberries and dark chocolate may be a dentist-friendly Valentines treat!?

Strawberries contain vitamin C (which promotes gum health) and malic acid which can help with removing surface stains. Strawberries are fibrous, which stimulates saliva flow, your body's first line of defense against plaque buildup. However, strawberries are naturally acidic, which can weaken enamel.

Dark Chocolate contains polyphenols, which are compounds which neutralize bacteria, which leave behind cavity-causing acid. Dark chocolate also contains theobromine, a compound of cocoa, may strengthen enamel! Dark chocolate is not very sticky, meaning it can be washed away with rinsing!

Despite these health benefits, it is important to remember that strawberries naturally are acidic, which, if left on your teeth, can wear down enamel. Also, dark chocolate contains some sugar, which attracts bacteria. It is good idea to rinse with water and keep up with regular flossing and brushing!
